SolidWorks Announces Annual Design Contest

CONCORD, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Sept. 6, 2006— The world's most skilled and creative design engineers have a new chance to win deserved recognition for designing better products now that the 10th annual SolidWorks Design Contest is officially under way.

More than US$150,000 in prizes will be awarded to 10 winners, who will be spotlighted at the SolidWorks World 2007 International User Conference and Exposition, Feb. 4-7, 2007, in New Orleans.

The contest challenges SolidWorks(R) 3D CAD software users to create outstanding designs in three categories: models, photorealistic images, and animations. Honors include a Grand Prize for best model, with the winner receiving an assortment of prizes, including a Dell Precision(TM) 390 Workstation and 20-inch monitor.

"The clock is ticking, and even in August the entries were flowing in," said Rainer Gawlick, SolidWorks Corporation's vice president of worldwide marketing. "Excitement has grown around the contest every year as SolidWorks World attendees see winning designs and think, 'I could do that.' It's thrilling to see how design teams are dramatically improving products with SolidWorks and COSMOS(R) software, and inventing new products that challenge our preconceptions."

All entries will be judged based on aesthetic appeal, technical challenges, the organization's use of SolidWorks software, and supporting explanatory text. Entries must be received by Nov. 30, 2006 at 11:59 p.m. EST. To enter, visit

Last year's winners included models of:

-- the womb-like PremaCare Incubator, designed by 360 Grader Produktdesign AS of Oslo, Norway;

-- the Hamilton Beach Change-a-Bowl(R) food processor product;

-- an 1879 steam locomotive, modeled for unique "industrial archeology" purposes (Gould Studios);

-- the Sub-Zero(R) PRO 48 refrigerator/freezer combination;

-- and futuristic airport lounge chairs, submitted by psMetalltechnik, Switzerland. To see all of last year's winning entries, visit CustomerDesignContest/CustomerDesignContestWinners.html.
