August 2006 Autodesk Inventor Of The Month

FULLERTON, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Sep 05, 2006 -- Can Lines Engineering Inc., a worldwide designer and builder of conveyor system solutions for the food, beverage and most all industry's conveying needs since 1960, was named Autodesk Inventor of the Month for August 2006. Downey, Calif.-based Can Lines Engineering ( credits this award to its use of the software capabilities in Autodesk Inventor 3D Design Software and the comprehensive training and support provided by Autodesk reseller KETIV Technologies Inc.

Can Lines Engineering designs, fabricates and installs a range of conveyor solutions for its food and beverage clients. These systems perform a variety of functions, from getting cans and bottles filled, capped and labeled, to getting products loaded into cases and shipped out.

Recently, Can Lines Engineering used Autodesk Inventor software to develop a one-of-a-kind bottle conveyor system that was able to handle 7-ounce, 12-ounce, 16-ounce, 22-ounce, 32-ounce, and 40-ounce bottles -- all in one line. This engineering feat was particularly impressive given that cans, bottles and other types of containers constantly require changes in orientation as they pass through conveyor systems.

"There is no way we could have created such a complex conveyor system using 2D drawings," said Dave Gadberry, engineering manager at Can Lines. "Using the superior 3D functionality in Inventor, we were able to specifically design the railing of the conveyor for each different bottle type, allowing all six of them to fit on the same line."

Equally important to Can Lines' success was the comprehensive technical training and support provided by KETIV Technologies.

Over the past several years, Can Lines Engineering has relied on KETIV Technologies for not only fundamental Inventor training but also advanced training through KETIV U, which provides one training class a month for a continuous 12 months. Can Lines Engineering also has benefited from KETIV Technologies' customized, on-site training courses as well as a customized Vault data management implementation.

"Our understanding of the conveyor system industry and knowledge of its competitive landscape enabled us to customize their curriculum and product presentations in a way that could be directly applied to their application," said Anthony Rodriguez, KETIV Technologies manufacturing applications engineer. "Lead times and product quality are very important in the competitive beverage industry. We understood that going into the training, and made sure that our instruction was focused on helping Can Lines' engineers improve their quality and time to market."

The skills and knowledge learned during training also enabled Can Lines Engineering to complete its bottle conveyor system much faster than would have been possible with 2D drawings.

"During our engineering design phase, we relied upon support from KETIV Technologies to answer questions on assemblies and models," Gadberry said. "The training was especially valuable because we learned some time-saving shortcuts, which helped us shave time off our design. That was beneficial because this program is very robust, and there are tools that we would have never known existed without KETIV Technologies providing some guidance.

"We've been able to cut down our fabrication times by 70 percent," Gadberry noted. "Prior to Inventor, we would hand the people in our fabrication shop a couple sheets of 2D drawings, and they would come back with a finished product in 12 weeks. Now, we can hand them a couple of Inventor models, and they'll be able to fabricate something for us in a few weeks because the 3D data we're giving them is so much more rich and detailed."

Autodesk's Inventor of the Month program recognizes the most innovative design and engineering advancements made by the extensive community of customers using Autodesk Inventor software, the world's number one selling 3D mechanical design software and best choice for 3D manufacturing design. Each month, Autodesk selects an Inventor of the Month from the more than 500,000 users of Autodesk Inventor, its best-selling 3D mechanical design Inventor software.
