Five Product Lifecycle Collaboration "X Factors" Delivering Competitive Advantage, Says New AberdeenGroup Report

Manufacturers Using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Tools to Collaborate across the Product Lifecycle More Likely to Hit Time-to-Market, Revenue, Cost Targets

BOSTON, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Long touted as a panacea, product lifecycle collaboration is now paying off. According to a new Aberdeen report, best in class companies -- those that meet time-to-market, cost reduction, revenue, and quality targets 80% to 100% of the time -- engage in more forms of collaboration; work with more external partners; and use more specialized collaborative PLM tools -- across the product lifecycle.

Aberdeen's "The Product Lifecycle Collaboration Benchmark Report: The Product Profitability 'X Factor'" examines manufacturers' challenges, goals, and approaches for five forms of collaboration. The five forms analyzed are design collaboration, value chain collaboration, project collaboration, real-time meeting collaboration, and 3D publishing.

"The research shows that most collaboration comes early, before the product launch," says Jim Brown, Aberdeen Vice President of Product Innovation research and report author. "Companies are successfully using the five different forms of collaboration at different times in the lifecycle, and in different ways. Collaboration later in the product lifecycle, particularly 3D publishing and reusing CAD models for downstream documentation, is displaying the fastest growth."

The report also identifies "X factors" or best practices -- organizational structures, processes, and technologies -- that differentiate best in class companies and deliver competitive advantage. These include:

    * Collaborating externally. Top performers collaborate with customers and
suppliers more frequently than their peers -- 75% versus 62% -- and 50%
      more with third-party engineering teams.

    * Collaborating across the lifecycle. Top performers collaborate on more
topics and more frequently, for example, on systems-level design and
      manufacturing instructions.

    * Developing a collaboration platform. In all stages and types of
collaboration, product data management (PDM) are more widely used by
best in class companies, which also use more specialty PLM tools such
      as digital mockup tools
