French Aerospace Consortium Selects Optomec's LENS System

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—July 6, 2006— GERAILP, the French Research Group for Industrial Laser Applications, recently took delivery of their first LENS(R) system from Optomec(R) Inc. GERAILP will utilize the LENS Model 850-R in a Ministry of Research funded project, named PROFIL, which is developing production processes for the direct manufacturing and repair of flight-critical aerospace components in titanium and nickel-based alloys. The PROFIL project is backed by a strong industrial consortium including Dassault Aviation, EADS, Eurocopter, MBDA and SNECMA.

Pascal Aubry, GERAILP Program Manager, stated, "The PROFIL consortium's prime interest in LENS was the ability to rapidly manufacture and repair large, aerospace components in performance materials, such as titanium and nickel-based alloys, to exacting aerospace standards." Optomec's patented LENS Systems are ideally suited for these applications because the LENS process is housed in a closed chamber which is purged with argon so that the oxygen and moisture levels stay below 10 parts per million. This keeps the part clean and prevents contamination, a critical step in processing high-performance materials.

The GERAILP group was created on Feb. 4, 1997, through the cooperation of the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Defense Ministry (DGA). The facility collaborates directly with leading French companies to develop and implement advanced laser materials processing solutions for industry.
