Foster-Miller Relies on Synergis Adept EDM to Help Manage Large Complex Projects and Achieve Industry Certifications
Improves Business Processes and Reduces Costs
Quakertown, PA, June 29, 2006 — Synergis Software, an independent division of Synergis Technologies, Inc., today announced that the EES Division of Foster-Miller, Inc., a QinetiQ company, (
www.foster-miller.com) an engineering and technology development firm, uses Synergis Adept software to manage their documents. This includes many aspects including review and release processes; peer, management, and customer collaboration; design history maintenance; industry standards compliance; and as a central repository for standard operation procedures (SOP).
Before implementing Adept, a manual process was used that, at times, could be labor intensive. In place of a document management tool they used Microsoft Windows to assign rights to personnel and directories. This system would have made it difficult for Foster-Miller’s EES division to achieve the AS9100 and CMM-III certifications that they sought. An automated document management system seemed like a natural fit, but they were wary of an engineering document management (EDM) system that would get in the way of user productivity. They needed a flexible EDM system that could meet the needs of their diverse projects while being a natural part of an individual’s daily activities, rather than an artificial new task.
“A good process is as invisible as possible, but still delivers significant benefits,” said Andrew Courier, Program Manager, Foster-Miller. “Our goal was to automate as much as possible — not to hire additional personnel to support new processes. We don’t need a dedicated group controlling the baselines or viewing rights, or handing out numbers. Adopting Synergis Adept was a very good move for us.”
Currently, Foster-Miller uses 30 copies of Adept with its Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and SolidWorks software. In addition to the out-of-the-box capability, the company added two custom extensions from Synergis Software: the Adept Library Signature (ALS) for complex approval routing; and the Automatic Number Generator, which automatically names the models, detail drawings, and presentation files, as well as other design files created with software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and other tools such as Visio and SolidWorks.
Adept Helps Manage Processes for Large Military Projects
Foster-Miller develops everything from food manufacturing equipment to medical devices to advanced military robotics and systems. In two typical projects, Foster-Miller is a major contributor in developing the next generation of aircraft carrier launchers and arresting gear, so it’s important to have a system that is flexible enough to provide process control for a wide range of projects. For example, Foster-Miller has just completed the requirements definition phase for the next generation aircraft carrier launcher system. The company has generated more than one hundred performance specifications that required peer reviews and traceability. Adept is used to manage the review and release process.
“We use Adept as much more than a drawing vault,” said Courier. “Our process involves several Adept libraries with different levels of security and access. Adept provides a very good environment for us to have a Work In Process (WIP) library so from the very inception of a project we are always reaping benefits from using an EDM. Therefore, we can maximize our team collaboration while maintaining a design history.”
