Eclipse Relies on UGS' Full Suite of Product Lifecycle Management Technology to Build Its Revolutionary Eclipse 500
The Robert J. Collier Trophy is awarded annually "for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year." The list of Collier winners represents a timeline of aviation, as many of the awardees mark major events in the history of flight. Robert Collier commissioned the trophy in 1910 with the intent to encourage the American aviation community to strive for excellence and achievement in aeronautic development. The trophy was presented to Eclipse at an award ceremony on May 15, at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington.
Eclipse Aviation is designing, developing, manufacturing and flight testing the Eclipse 500, an aircraft that has set a bold new standard for jet price and performance. To create the Eclipse 500, Eclipse used technologies and business practices forged in the technology industry to drive down cost while increasing performance. Eclipse is applying innovation across every facet of its business with the use of UGS' PLM technology, to make the Eclipse 500 significantly safer, easier and less expensive to operate than traditional business aircraft, and more efficient to certify and produce.
"UGS congratulates Eclipse Aviation for winning the Robert J. Collier Trophy. Eclipse Aviation most definitely embodies the spirit of the award as it continually strives for excellence in aviation," said Dave Shirk, executive vice president of Global Marketing for UGS. "UGS shares Eclipse's commitment to excellence and is proud to be the exclusive PLM technology enabling the groundbreaking innovations at Eclipse Aviation. Eclipse Aviation is a perfect example of how PLM technology allows companies to bring innovative to market faster with increased efficiency and reduced cost."
"Eclipse Aviation is proud to be honored with the Robert J. Collier Trophy. This recognition is for every person and every company that is involved with the development of the Eclipse 500," said Vern Raburn, founder, CEO and president, Eclipse Aviation. "At Eclipse, the use of UGS products has allowed us to create the Eclipse 500 in an entirely digital product development environment, leveraging those digital simulations of the aircraft to make key decisions throughout the product lifecycle. UGS' commitment to customer success, combined with their leading edge PLM technology, fits perfectly with Eclipse Aviation's progressive approach to enhance personalized air travel."
Exclusive use of NX(R) software, UGS' digital product development tools, made it possible for Eclipse engineers to move to a completely electronic design process. The final 3-D designs serve as the master model, which is then captured and communicated to downstream decision-makers using Teamcenter(R) software, UGS' digital lifecycle management solution. Teamcenter's CAD-neutral collaboration environment extends access to valuable product information within Eclipse's organization -- sales, marketing, purchasing, manufacturing, etc. -- and outside to partners and suppliers. Teamcenter also enables ongoing communication with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors to streamline the FAA certification process for the Eclipse 500.
The Eclipse 500 has been designed for high-volume production. Using components of Tecnomatix(R) software, UGS' suite of digital manufacturing solutions, Eclipse is leveraging advanced manufacturing methods not traditionally used in very light jet aviation to dramatically increase manufacturing efficiency. The company plans to use modern automotive manufacturing techniques including moving assembly lines and robotics.
