Indiana Manufacturing: Plants Up 81; Jobs Down 1%

EVANSTON, Ill., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Indiana lost 6,711 manufacturing jobs in 2005 according to the 2006 Indiana Manufacturers Directory, published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), Evanston, IL. MNI data also shows manufacturing plants increased by 81 over the past twelve months.

MNI statistics indicate Indiana is now home to 11,625 manufacturers employing 701,005 workers, ranking it 11th in the nation by number of manufacturers and 8th in the U.S. by industrial employment.

According to MNI's ten-year study, the Hoosier State lost twice as many jobs over the past 5 years as it had gained between 1996 and 2000. Indiana lost over 40,000 industrial jobs between 2001 and 2006 compared to the 20,000 jobs the state gained in the 5 years preceding.

"Manufacturing capacity utilization is at a four-year high, and production is climbing," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI, "Unfortunately, this hasn't translated into increased employment, as companies find ways to trim costs through technology and outsourcing."

Indiana's 1% job loss in 2005 is moderate compared to its neighbors. MNI data shows Illinois lost 3% manufacturing employment while Ohio lost 2.7%.

Indianapolis remains Indiana's industrial leader with 1,491 plants. MNI reports the city gained 38 plants in 2005. Other major manufacturing cities include Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Evansville and South Bend. These cities account for 29% of Indiana's manufacturing plants.

The 2006 Directory reports Indiana's top three industries by number of plants are industrial machinery/equipment, printing and publishing, and metal fabricating.

MNI reports top industries by employment are motor vehicle parts and accessories plastic products, and blast furnaces and steel mills.
