CAD/CAM Converter For ABB Robots

IRBCAM converts the APT-CL format to the ABB robot language RAPID and supports the robot controllers S4, S4C, S4C+ and IRC5. IRBCAM opens up powerful CAD/CAM capabilities to users of ABB IRB-type robots. IRBCAM has been tested mainly with SurfCam, but will work on any cam software that can export to the APT-CL format. More than 3 million coordinate points can be executed by the robot. IRBCAM supports 3- and 5-axis machining operations and is suited for rapid prototyping, grinding, surface finishing or mould production of wood and foam materials and light metals (aluminium). Typical accuracies that can be achieved with an ABB IRB-type robot is 0.5mm and a workspace volume of approximately 2x2x2 metres. IRBCAM supports external axes, which can extend the workspace even further (typical linear tracks are 5 to 10m). A rotary external axis enables an object to be machined from all sides in one setup.

    IRBCAM is the missing piece in the puzzle which will enable traditional machine shops
    to start using industrial robots. The videos from the National Manufacturing Week
    in Sydney, May 2006, are impressive.
