Alabama Manufacturing: Plants Up 54; Jobs Down 1.1%

EVANSTON, Ill., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Alabama gained 54 manufacturing plants but lost 4,365 jobs in 2005 according to the 2006 Alabama Manufacturers Register, an industrial guide published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), Evanston, IL.

The group's private survey involves contacting every manufacturer in the U.S. including small, start-up companies.

MNI reports Alabama is home to 6,506 manufacturing companies employing 360,311 workers.

"Manufacturing capacity utilization is at a four-year high, and production is increasing," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI. "Unfortunately, this hasn't translated into employment gains, as companies are finding ways to increase efficiency through technology and outsourcing."

According to MNI's five-year study, Alabama's 1.1% drop in jobs indicates a slowdown in the plummeting industrial employment the Yellowhammer state has experienced since 2001. MNI statistics show Alabama lost 8% of its manufacturing employment in 2002 and 5% in 2003.

MNI's regional study shows Alabama ranks 4th in the Southeast in number of manufacturing jobs, accounting for 10% of the region's industrial employment.

Alabama's top three industrial cities are Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville. These cities account for 1,407 plants.

According to the 2006 Register, Alabama's top three industries by number of manufacturers are industrial machinery and equipment, lumber and wood, and printing and publishing. These sectors account for 38% of Alabama manufacturers.

The top industries by employment are poultry slaughtering, motor vehicles, and blast furnaces/steel mills. These industries represent 42,621 of Alabama's manufacturing jobs.

Detailed information on all of Alabama's 6,506 companies can be found in the 2006 Alabama Manufacturers Register, available in print for $99. The 712- page directory provides an in-depth company profile of up to 30 facts, including addresses, phone/fax numbers, web/email addresses, product(s) manufactured, names and titles of key executives, area of distribution, annual sales, number of employees, brand names, year established and more.

MNI's Alabama data is also available on CD-ROM for $152 to $433. Users may select manufacturing companies using thirteen different criteria, including area or zip code, county, SIC, sales volume, number of employees, title and more. This information can be downloaded at http://www.mnileads.com.
