Exabyte VXA-320 Packet Drives Now Available With IBM System p And System i Servers

BOULDER, Colo.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—April 17, 2006— Exabyte Corporation (OTCBB: EXBY), a leading innovator in tape backup, restore, and archival systems, today announced that IBM will use Exabyte VXA-320 drives in IBM System p(TM) and System i(TM) servers. Today's news follows a similar announcement for IBM eServer(R) xSeries(R) systems earlier this year. IBM is the world's number one server vendor(1). VXA is Exabyte's patented tape format that utilizes discreet digital data packets rather than traditional linear tracks resulting in dramatically enhanced data reliability.

"VXA's third generation drive, the VXA-320, is now available across the IBM System p, System i and IBM eServer xSeries product lines, which now gives even more IBM customers the opportunity to benefit from advanced VXA Packet Technology," said Tom Ward, president and CEO, Exabyte. "VXA is an important technology, and we are pleased to be working with IBM, a recognized global leader in technology standards, to deliver patented, high-value technology solutions to its clients worldwide."

The VXA-320 Packet Tape Drive records up to 320 GB to a single cartridge at a data transfer rate of up to 24 MB/sec. Further, VXA-320 delivers four times the data rate and more than four times the storage capacity of the current DDS platform (DAT 72), and is still affordably priced for the SMB market. All VXA-320 products deliver full read and write compatibility with VXA's second generation, protecting the investment of users who have already stepped up to the VXA platform. With VXA-320, customers can use their same VXA-2 X Media tapes and immediately realize twice the capacity and speed. And only VXA offers three different cartridge sizes (320/172/80 GB), providing users the flexibility to choose the capacity that best meets their current storage and budget needs and giving VXA-320 users a clear price-per-gigabyte advantage over the DDS/DAT format.

The VXA-320 Drive is available to order immediately by IBM System p(TM) and System i(TM) customers for internal server installation. To learn more about Exabyte products and VXA Packet Technology, visit www.exabyte.com.

VXA Packet Technology

The key to Exabyte's award-winning VXA technology is that instead of traditional, vulnerable data tracks, data is recorded in small sections or packets, similar to how data is delivered over the Internet. This efficient method of recording data provides superior capacity, speed and error-proof integrity when restoring data. As the only storage media format to use Packet Technology, VXA is regarded as the worldwide leader in capacity, speed, reliability and value for small-to-midsize businesses. VXA is so reliable that it is up to 180 times more likely to properly restore data than other tape formats such as DDS/DAT -- even from a damaged tape. VXA tape cartridges have been disaster-tested under the most severe conditions -- including violent vibration, blowing volcanic dust, freezing inside blocks of ice, boiling water and even hot coffee -- to prove they can provide reliable and complete data restores.
