Florida Manufacturing: Plants Down 23; Jobs Down 1%

EVANSTON, Ill., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida lost 6,144 manufacturing jobs and 23 related plants in 2005 according to a private survey conducted by the 2006 Florida Manufacturers Register, a manufacturers' guide published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), Evanston, IL.

MNI's survey involves contacting every manufacturer in the state, including small, start-up companies as well as large manufacturers.

Florida is home to 17,452 manufacturing companies employing 589,640 workers, reports the Register.

"While all other sectors of the U.S. economy are growing, manufacturing employment is declining. We're losing the low-skilled manufacturing jobs to countries that offer cheap labor," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI.

According to MNI, the Sunshine State ranks 7th in the nation by number of manufacturing plants and 12th in the U.S. by manufacturing employment. Florida ranks 1st in the Southeast by number of companies and 2nd by industrial employment, just behind North Carolina.

The Register reports Miami, Tampa, and Jacksonville remain Florida's top industrial cities, accounting for 20% of the state's manufacturers. Miami lost 125 plants in 2005 while Tampa and Jackson gained a total of 18 manufacturers. All three cities lost a net 331 plants over 5 years.

According to the 2006 Register, Florida's top three industries are printing and publishing, metal fabricating, and industrial machinery and equipment. These account for 40% of Florida's manufacturing plants.

MNI data reports Florida's top industries by employment are newspapers (employs 23,494), communications equipment (employs 21,090) and plastic products (employs 20,954).

Detailed information on all of Florida's 17,452 companies can be found in the 2006 Florida Manufacturers Register, published by Manufacturers' News, Inc.
