DTM(TM) Announces Release of VANGUARD(TM) SLS(R) Systems; New Product Establishes Company at Forefront of Rapid Manufacturing

AUSTIN, Texas, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- DTM Corporation (Nasdaq: DTMC) today announced the release of its new VANGUARD(TM) and VANGUARD HS (High Speed) SLS® Systems. These systems represent DTM's commitment to the emerging demand for rapid manufacturing and a significant opportunity for the company to address new applications, attract new customers, and open up new markets. Both models will be commercially available in August.*

"VANGUARD represents a significant milestone for DTM. From a product perspective, we are standing at a crossroads. The company continues to make strides in addressing the Rapid Prototyping needs while also taking the lead in developing solutions for the emerging demand for Rapid Manufacturing," said John S. Murchison, III, DTM's President and CEO. "We believe that our VANGUARD systems promise to open up new business opportunities as companies adopt SLS for Rapid Manufacturing applications. For example, we are currently working with leaders in the aerospace and medical industries to implement SLS as a manufacturing technology."*

Murchison added, "As a company eager to meet industry needs and to be at the forefront of Rapid Manufacturing, we have taken feedback from our customers and prospects and combined it with our extensive technical resources to create the VANGUARD SLS systems."

The new VANGUARD systems are similar to DTM's current Sinterstation® systems in that they both use DTM's SLS selective laser sintering process. However, the new VANGUARD systems offer several significant improvements. To begin, the VANGUARD HS System has been designed to create production-quality parts faster. In addition, parts produced on the VANGUARD systems have greater accuracy and precision, finer detail, and smoother surface finish.

"Today's manufacturers want to produce production-quality parts as fast as possible," added Patrick Lordi, Vice President of Sales for DTM. "They want the benefits of rapid prototyping, such as speed, versatility, and minimized downstream labor and costs. But they also demand accuracy and repeatability and the ability to move into rapid manufacturing. With our new VANGUARD SLS systems, we have made across-the-board system improvements to make these the most practical rapid manufacturing systems in the industry."

Improved accuracy

Based on benchmark comparison builds, the new VANGUARD SLS systems offer improved part accuracy over DTM's current Sinterstation systems. Dimensional tolerance data from a benchmark build on the VANGUARD HS SLS System showed up to 20 percent improvement over the Sinterstation 2500plus.

Smoother surface finish

DTM's VANGUARD systems are capable of creating parts with a smoother surface finish, due to an improved, proprietary scanning strategy and VANGUARD HS's new Celerity(TM) Beam Delivery System. A smoother surface finish and no support structures means less hand finishing, less time and less labor.

Finer resolution and feature definition

VANGUARD enables users to create parts with even thinner walls and delicate features in the .5 to .6 mm (0.020 to 0.025 inch) size range.

Speed

In one benchmark test, DTM built a complex auger measuring 144 mm (h) x 323 mm (w) x 267 mm (l) (5.7 x 12.7 x 10.5 inches) with both its DTM Sinterstation 2500plus and the new VANGUARD HS. The Sinterstation 2500plus completed the auger in 15 hours; the VANGUARD HS completed the same part in less than 7 hours. This represents a time reduction of more than 50 percent.

"Accuracy is a key threshold to cross before you can step into rapid manufacturing, but speed is the really exciting part of all this," noted Lordi. "DTM's VANGUARD systems are all about building more high quality parts faster and getting them into the customers' hands sooner. Moreover, improved speed ultimately lowers manufacturing costs."

System software and hardware improvements

"The nature of the SLS process has a lot to do with the speed of the VANGUARD system," said Mike Ervin, DTM's Vice President of Engineering. "We have enhanced system speed through improvements to the SLS software and hardware. These improvements have enabled us to increase the speed at which the system's CO2 laser transforms the powdered material into a solid, and increased the speed at which each layer of powder is put down."

"The culmination of all these improvements is really very simple: VANGUARD users will have the ability to produce more parts per hour, directly from their CAD data. The parts are created with less labor, and at less cost than ever before," said Kevin McAlea, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development.

McAlea added, "We believe that when companies compare the dramatic speed improvements of the VANGUARD to system costs, they will see not only an exciting high performance system that is a logical and realistic rapid manufacturing option, but also an incredible value and asset to their operations."
