AUSTIN, Texas, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- DTM Corporation (Nasdaq: DTMC) today announced the release of its new VANGUARD(TM) and VANGUARD HS (High Speed) SLS® Systems. These systems represent DTM's commitment to the emerging demand for rapid manufacturing and a significant opportunity for the company to address new applications, attract new customers, and open up new markets. Both models will be commercially available in August.*

The new VANGUARD systems are similar to DTM's current Sinterstation® systems in that they both use DTM's SLS selective laser sintering process. However, the new VANGUARD systems offer several significant improvements. To begin, the VANGUARD HS System has been designed to create production-quality parts faster. In addition, parts produced on the VANGUARD systems have greater accuracy and precision, finer detail, and smoother surface finish.

Based on benchmark comparison builds, the new VANGUARD SLS systems offer improved part accuracy over DTM's current Sinterstation systems. Dimensional tolerance data from a benchmark build on the VANGUARD HS SLS System showed up to 20 percent improvement over the Sinterstation 2500plus.
Smoother surface finish
DTM's VANGUARD systems are capable of creating parts with a smoother surface finish, due to an improved, proprietary scanning strategy and VANGUARD HS's new Celerity(TM) Beam Delivery System. A smoother surface finish and no support structures means less hand finishing, less time and less labor.
Finer resolution and feature definition
VANGUARD enables users to create parts with even thinner walls and delicate features in the .5 to .6 mm (0.020 to 0.025 inch) size range.
In one benchmark test, DTM built a complex auger measuring 144 mm (h) x 323 mm (w) x 267 mm (l) (5.7 x 12.7 x 10.5 inches) with both its DTM Sinterstation 2500plus and the new VANGUARD HS. The Sinterstation 2500plus completed the auger in 15 hours; the VANGUARD HS completed the same part in less than 7 hours. This represents a time reduction of more than 50 percent.

System software and hardware improvements
"The nature of the SLS process has a lot to do with the speed of the VANGUARD system," said Mike Ervin, DTM's Vice President of Engineering. "We have enhanced system speed through improvements to the SLS software and hardware. These improvements have enabled us to increase the speed at which the system's CO2 laser transforms the powdered material into a solid, and increased the speed at which each layer of powder is put down."
