Illinois Gains Plants But Loses Manufacturing Jobs

EVANSTON, Ill., Feb. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Illinois gained 73 plants but lost 31,819 manufacturing jobs over the past 12 months according to the 2006 Illinois Manufacturers Directory, an industrial guide published annually since 1912 by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), Evanston, IL.

MNI's private survey indicates Illinois is now home to 22,365 manufacturing companies employing 1,017,975 workers compared to the 22,292 plants and 1,049,794 jobs reported a year earlier.

The majority of Illinois manufacturers are located in the Northeast section of the state, housing 16,058 plants or 72% of the state's manufacturers in its twelve counties.

Chicago remains the Prairie State's industrial leader claiming 3,386 or 15% of the state's manufacturing companies. MNI data reports, however, that urban manufacturing companies are still being lost to the area's outlying suburbs.

Cook County lost 106 plants in 2005 and 799 plants since 2001. Chicago accounts for half of these losses. By comparison, many of Cook County's neighbors have increased their numbers of plants. According to MNI data, Lake, DuPage, Will, Kane, and McHenry Counties gained a total of 77 plants in 2005 and 179 plants since 2001. These 5 counties account for 6,311 plants or 28% of Illinois manufacturers.

"Part of that is suburban sprawl," said Tom Dubin, President of Manufacturers' News, Inc, "but manufacturers are choosing suburban and rural locations over Chicago due to a variety of concerns such as high taxes, limited open land, and crime. Forty years ago, Chicago was unmatched in terms of its labor pool representing 43% of Illinois manufacturers. Today, Chicago only accounts for 15% of the state's manufacturing plants."

The 2006 Directory reports Chicago lost 57 plants over the past 12 months and 453 plants over 5 years.

Illinois's top three industries lost plants according to industry data compiled by the 2006 Directory. Industrial machinery and equipment lost 24 plants in 2005 and 334 plants over 5 years. Printing and publishing lost 30 plants over one year while metal fabricating lost 11. These three industries account for 10,154 plants, or 45% of Illinois manufacturers.

Industries that indicated growth in 2005 are apparel and fabric products, stone glass and concrete, and lumber and wood products.
