The new product replaces the MAA's paper-based placement tests, which have been used by hundreds of institutions across North America since 1977. The new tests are delivered by a powerful Web-based system, automatically assessing student responses and performance.
"Today's students arrive with a wide range of backgrounds in mathematics," said John Kenelly, treasurer of the MAA. "The Placement Test Suite helps the MAA achieve its goal of incorporating high-quality testing materials with cutting edge information technology to provide realistic placement and improved success rates for all students. In addition, since placement tests can now be conducted prior to the scheduling process, institutions can now plan more effectively for all course levels and be confident that they are meeting students' specific needs."
The Placement Test Suite features six different subject tests and four parallel forms of each test. Each test is carefully balanced and tested by the MAA to provide consistent, reliable results. Deploying the tests online enables institutions to avoid the logistical headaches of traditional placement tests. Placement testing can be done before students arrive on campus, and results are available as soon as the student has completed the test. Class scheduling can then be done using the placement information.
"Our Placement Test Suite combines the most trusted placement tests in mathematics with the most trusted online testing platform," said Jim Cooper, CEO of Maplesoft. "This modern, efficient approach to an important aspect of higher education enables institutions to place their incoming students in the right mathematics courses quickly using the renowned MAA placement tests."
