Scottish Natural Heritage analyse links between green space and quality of life
February 2006: Cambridge – The GeoInformation® Group, publishers of Cities Revealed aerial photography (
www.citiesrevealed.com), recently created a Cities Revealed Land Use map of Glasgow’, using national land use mapping standards, in order for Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to review the links between greenspace and quality of life.
Commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland and the Glasgow and Clyde Valley (GCV) Structure Plan Team, the Cities Revealed Land Use map is being used in conjunction with OS MasterMap® and aerial photography to examine a range of social, economic and environmental benefits associated with greenspace. It is hoped that improved analysis of the spatial relationship between people and greenspace will help to formulate more effective greenspace policies and achieve better provision of quality greenspace through land-use planning and improved greenspace management in urban areas.
Alun Jones, Managing Director of The GeoInformation Group commented, “With the project now complete The GeoInformation Group has once again used its expertise in aerial photographic interpretation to map and characterise over 260, 000 Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap® polygons, across the 950 sq km of land in the GCV Structure plan area. The supply of valuable land use information to the project has meant that our contribution has helped support the development of important policy decisions in Scotland.”
The Head of SNH’s Environmental Audit Unit, hopes that urban mapping of this kind will take-off in Scotland. He said: “The Glasgow Green Network project will transform the way we are able to view and interpret urban areas. We have only scratched the surface of its potential in Scotland. We would like to see access to such data made as easy as possible and coverage extended to other urban areas throughout Scotland.”
