Curtin University of Technology, based in Western Australia, has subscribed to ER Mapper’s Educational Site Licenses program. The Site Licenses program allows unlimited access to the full suite of ER Mapper’s geospatial imagery applications and solutions for a low cost subscription fee.
Curtin is a major technology focused university with over 30,000 students, spread across several campuses in Australia and overseas. Curtin’s Department of Spatial Sciences and Department of Exploration Geophysics maintain student teaching and research laboratories. The Department of Spatial Sciences also has a large number of distance education classes with between 60 and 80 students taking units with web-based delivery of content each semester.
The Educational Site Licenses program is a cost effective solution for providing a complete suite of imagery products. A program subscription entitles the institution unlimited licenses of ER Mapper Software in the classroom, and in students’ and lecturers’ homes.
Dr. Robert Corner, Senior Lecturer at Curtin’s Department of Spatial Sciences said, “Adopting a site license solution has enabled us to provide all of our Remote Sensing course students, both those on campus and those studying web delivered distance units, with access to industry standard image processing software.
ER Mapper is in the Department of Spatial Sciences both for teaching and research. Recent research applications include activities in land use and urban planning, and in agricultural applications incorporating the mapping of weed infestations and precision agriculture work both within Australia and in the tropics.”
Dr. Jayson Meyers, Associate Professor in the Department of Exploration Geophysics at Curtin said “We are doing a number of exciting things with ER Mapper, aside from teaching the basics of ER Mapper to the Geophysics and Geology undergraduates. Our post-graduate researchers, from Honours to PhD level, use ER Mapper for imaging all kinds of airborne and ground based geophysical data, such as potential fields, electrical surveys and remote sensing data. We are also imaging multiband data from 256 channel radiometric and Hymap hyperspectral surveys to get more out of subtle mineral signatures for soil mapping and mineral exploration. ER Mapper’s classification tools also provide an added approach to getting more from multiple datasets”.
The ER Mapper image processing application is used as the primary teaching software in Remote Sensing courses at Curtin. It is also used as a research tool on a wide range of geospatial research projects.
