Product types covered include printers, scanners, software and services. SmarTech believes that this report offers the most granular forecast of 3D printing sector of any market study available in the 3D printing business.
Findings from the Report
In this report, SmarTech estimates that sales of 3D printing hardware, software and services will be worth $1.8 billion in 2013, growing to around $5.1 billion by 2018. However, despite the hype about 3D printing leading to the reindustrialization of developed countries, or the arrival of a "Maker" revolution that will impact the world in the way that the PC revolution did, SmarTech believes that much of the growth in the next few years will be driven by reduced material wastage, lowered shipping and labor costs and a reduction in capital expenditures.
Only after 2018 does SmarTech expect genuinely new markets to emerge. For example, by then there will be a sizeable educational market for 3D printers sold into universities and technical/community colleges driven by the demand for training in 3D printing skills. Although SmarTech doesn't view the Maker movement as another PC revolution, it projects that maker/home use revenues for 3D printers will be $1.11 billion by 2020. Medical markets will also expand to $1.08 billion by 2020.
In addition to providing forecasts, this report critically examines the strategies of leading firms in the 3D printing space and also assesses recent technology developments in 3D printing space from a commercial perspective.
