Selecting the appropriate medium of exchange for virtual collaboration is not often obvious nor straightforward. Many times the decision is based upon one format versus another, when in fact each choice has its own strengths and weaknesses in a given scenario. This presentation will provide example use cases from each stage of the product life-cycle and discuss the potential application of STEP and the common collaboration formats in these instances. Insight into emerging (best) practices by identifying existing gaps, overlapping uses, and potentially conflicting areas between these collaborative media will also be explored. A goal of this presentation will be to generate discussion regarding best practices in this area.

Nathan Hartman is an Associate Professor and Assistant Department Head in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University. He is also Co-Director of the Purdue University PLM Center of Excellence. His current research interests include the use of constraint-based CAD tools in the design process, the process and methodology for model-based definition and the model-based enterprise, geometry automation, and data interoperability and re-use. He currently teaches or has taught courses in 3D modeling, virtual collaboration, 3D data interoperability, and engineering design graphics standards and documentation. Nathan has taught graduate courses in the foundations of graphics in technology and instrumentation and measurement in research design. He has worked fora variety of companies in using and integrating PLM tools in the engineering design process through the development of custom training applications and materials. Nathan holds a Bachelor of Science in Technical Graphics and a Master of Science in Technology from Purdue University, and a Doctorate in Technology Education from North Carolina State University.

Mr. Rosche is a Senior Associate with ICF International. He has over 20 years experience in the development and implementation of PLM standards. He organizes and facilitates the CAx Implementor Forum (http://cax-if.org/). Mr. Rosche was the recipient of the prestigious Brad Rigdon Technical Management Award. Mr. Rosche has been on contract to a number of U.S. Government agencies including The National Institute of Standards and Technology, Naval Air Systems Command, Missile Defense Agency, and GSA. Mr. Rosche holds a Bachelor of Science, in Business Administration from Christopher Newport College (May 1983) with an emphasis in Economics and Marketing.

Kevin Fischer has over 25 years experience in product design, engineering services, and manufacturing technology. He is currently part of Advanced Manufacturing Technology in Rockwell Collins, where he is responsible for identifying and engaging external leverage opportunities that align with enterprise manufacturing technology needs. Kevin has a deep appreciation of issues and challenges companies face when transitioning product from design to manufacture. He has directed teams responsible for engineering design tools used across the enterprise, including systems engineering, software development, ASIC design, EDA, CAE and CAD. He championed development and implementation of the enterprise PDM system. Kevin is involved in a number of industry consortia focused on collaborative R&D for technology and standards development used in product design and manufacture. He is a Technical Advisory member for PDES, Inc. as well as the industry representative on the CAx ImplementorForum. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Iowa.
