UGS Corp. announced that it has signed more than 30 contracts in the High Tech and Electronics (HTE) industry in the first half of 2006, with leading global companies including Ericsson, Hisense, Lam Research, LG Electronics, LS Cable, and Samsung Electronics.
Success in the high tech and electronics industry is dependent on a company's ability to rapidly and profitably bring new and innovative products to market ahead of the competition. UGS' PLM software for HTE enhances collaboration, speed and efficiency of core business processes by transforming the process of innovation through digital product development, digital lifecycle management and digital manufacturing.
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies, uses UGS CAx and Teamcenter software in its global mechanical design department to enhance global collaboration and to bring better products to market faster.
"Samsung, a recognized leader in high tech electronics, is committed to delivering the highest quality, innovative products to our global customers. Samsung's next generation product development infrastructure will enable further improvement of process integration and knowledge re-use," said Sehyun Kim, Vice President, R&D Innovation Team, Corporate Technology Operations, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
enable better business decisions, reduce physical prototypes through digital simulation and manage outsourcing of design work and manufacturing in emerging markets."
UGS is a leading provider of software and services to the High Tech and Electronics industry. UGS software is widely used at the leading High Tech and Electronics companies globally including the top semiconductor and mobile phone manufacturers, 4 of the top 5 consumer electronics OEMs, 3 of the top 5 semiconductor equipment manufacturers, and 8 of the top 10 contract manufacturers. UGS' solutions enable companies to develop innovative products that capture the imagination of consumers.
According to leading PLM industry analyst firm CIMdata, Inc. UGS is the leading provider of collaborative Product Definition management (cPDm) software to the High Tech and Electronics industry. CIMdata also recognized UGS as a PLM leader and as the vendor with the top market presence in the cPDm market segment - the most critical and fastest growing segment of the PLM industry.
UGS' product offerings for the HTE industry are developed using the knowledge and expertise gained from years of experience working with the world's leading HTE manufacturers, to address core business processes including environmental compliance management, program planning and control, manufacturing process management, digital simulation, component and vendor management, platform development and systems configuration and software product management.
UGS' HTE solutions are focused on the following initiatives that enable innovation across the entire product lifecycle:
Commentary

Like many of its competitors, UGS is finding a home in the world of high-tech electronics on both the consumer product design side, as well as the production machinery side that produces the electrical, electronic, and mechanical components that comprise most new products. This all involves a very complex chain of processes and events and promotes a trend that I have seen get stronger and stronger over time - the notion and reality of mechatronics - that encompasses both design, engineering, and manufacturing of hybrid mechanical, electrical, electronic, and software systems.
Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering ("mecha" for mechanisms), electronic engineering ("tronics" for electronics), and software engineering. The purpose of this interdisciplinary engineering field is automata from an engineering perspective for controlling advanced hybrid systems. Although it sounds (and is) complicated, mechatronics revolves around mechanics, electronics, and computing which, when combined and working together, actually provide simpler, more economical, reliable, and versatile products and systems.
reason, that's the way things have evolved in the real world. Just think about it - there are relatively few purely mechanical products and systems anymore without some integrated electrical/electronic/ software component.
From what I can gather, a typical mechatronic engineering degree involves classes in engineering mathematics, mechanics, machine component design, mechanical design, thermodynamics, circuits and systems, electronics and communications, control theory, digital signal processing, power engineering, and robotics. That is incredibly different than what I went through during my course of mechanical engineering study, and would be quite challenging, because of the topic breadth, but also very exciting.
So, while mechatronics is a reality today, I expect to see the delineation of the various constituent disciplines that comprise it to continue to blur, so that they all virtually become one when designing, engineering, and manufacturing historically mechanical products and systems.
