Intergraph Process, Power & Offshore SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 Expands Support for Plant and Project Operation

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2003--The Process, Power & Offshore division of Intergraph Corporation (NASDAQ: INGR) today announced the 4.0 version of SmartPlant(R) P&ID, the data-centric, intelligent piping and instrumentation engineering software for the plant and project lifecycle. Scheduled for availability fourth quarter, SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 includes features for multiple project execution, version tracking with data and graphical comparison, commercial integration with The Engineering Framework, license control, thin client compatibility and other improvements. SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 ( helps enable more informed technical and business decisions while increasing the value of engineering information- contributing to safety, constructibility, operability and reliability throughout design, construction and operation.

Executives of the Huntsville, Ala.-based division of Intergraph announced and demonstrated SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 today at the International Process & Power 2003 conference. Intergraph also unveiled special SmartPlant P&ID data conversion and competitive trade-up programs, announced today in a separate press release.

Manages Multiple, Simultaneous Projects

The exclusive multi-project management capability of SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 enables users to manage and control multiple, simultaneous projects within the operating plant or design. On a local or worldwide concurrent engineering basis, users claim a system or object (for example, a single P&ID or an individual item such as a feed pump), modify the design and then merge the changes into the master as-built P&ID. Plant changes have historically been document- and drawing-based, spread across many P&IDs, and thus difficult to control because of the ripple effect of up or downstream modifications made by other project teams. In SmartPlant P&ID 4.0, the work in progress along with the plant as-built P&ID share the same base reference data from a single source, reducing the administrative burden of design and operation engineering while promoting efficiency of routine operations.

For the plant owner-operator, this new capability solves the problem of multiple engineering projects conducted in the same operating plant. Until the modifications are approved and verified as installed, the as-built is preserved without changes.

For the engineering firm, the feature enables application of "what-if" multiple process cases to determine impact of change and design studies based on the certified as-built P&ID of the operating plant. Engineers run tabular and graphical reports and compare them to help determine the engineering requirements and cost impact of design changes. Using the global worksharing capability, an offsite contractor can use the multi-project management feature to work on a subsystem and merge the completed design into the master P&ID.

Version Control and Compare

New versioning and comparative features further support multi-project execution capability. Engineers store different versions of the same P&ID within a single database and run a variety of comparative reports to identify items added, modified or deleted. The feature includes graphical and data comparison between versions of a single project, a project and as-built or two projects. The changes are color coded according to version on the P&ID and in the property grid window. Users can choose among previous versions of the design to effectively meet changing project scope requirements.

Improves Integration via The Engineering Framework

SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 includes an adapter to The Engineering Framework (TEF), the Intergraph enterprise engineering integration, workflow and change management architecture. The TEF adapter provides a mechanism for integrating SmartPlant P&ID with both up- and downstream engineering tools including Intergraph SmartPlant and third-party applications. The global information access, notification, task communication and documentation capabilities combine to create work process breakthroughs for making better engineering and business decisions earlier in the plant and project lifecycle.

License Control, Thin Client Support Increase Options

SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 features controlled licensing to enable customers to efficiently administer software use and ensure licensing compliance without additional monitoring burden. The licensing mechanism is the same reliable, easily administered software used for years in the Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS(TM)). SmartPlant P&ID 4.0 is certified to run in a thin client environment such as Citrix MetaFrame. Thin client operation helps reduce IT costs since lower-cost, generic PCs are used as clients and software administration is performed centrally. Special licensing is available for thin client use.

Additional Features Boost Flexibility

Additional features include database undo and support for the latest versions of commercial database software and current operating systems. The new database undo feature complements the graphical undo capability in the previous version of SmartPlant P&ID. Now, users can revert to the previous operation with respect to both data and graphics. Commercial database and operating system compatibility is improved with support for Oracle 8i and 9i, Microsoft SQL 2000 and Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP.
