Dr. Richard Riff

A Global PLM strategy in Ford Motor Company

Abstract

Well before the latest economic downturn Ford Motor Company invested in new systems, processes and IT infrastructure to improve product life cycle efficiencies while  ensuring delivery of precise and up-to-date product information to the extended enterprise in a timely, efficient and usable form.  Implementing a global PLM strategy and enabling interoperability across all Product Development tools, such as CAD, PDM, Mfg, and BOM, was an essential part of delivering that strategy.  For Ford to stay competitive globally as it became smaller, and nimble to address the global economic realities, it launched an aggressive drive to globalize its product development.  To meet this objective, PD is leveraging that global PLM environment as well as the interoperability standards between its systems and tools to share and collaborate on vehicle development in different counties and on different continents.

What we learned from this on going effort is that the interoperability with the BOM, Release and Change Management tools is as important as the interoperability across the core product creation tools (PDM, CAD, and Visualization).  This keynote presentation  outlines the key aspects of this strategy and how it is being implemented.
