Accelerating Aerospace Innovation
 |
Tony Affuso
Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer |
Earlier this month Siemens PLM Software, along with other Siemens colleagues, participated in the Singapore Airshow, which has grown to become one of the major aerospace and defense (A&D) events in the world. (For a first-hand look, be sure to view video highlights from the show
here.) It is interesting to see how the A&D industry in Asia is emerging as a major challenger to traditional industry leaders in Europe and the Americas. New developments across the region point to growth in China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and other countries. Leading companies in this region are now launching programs that will challenge the status quo in an industry that is poised for significant growth.
This event also demonstrated the broad impact globalization and new competitive requirements for innovation are having on the industry overall. The first decade of the 21st century has presented unparalleled challenges with growth in each segment, including commercial, defense, space and general aviation. Yet in the coming years the global A&D industry, including both government agencies and their industry partners, will face greater challenges than ever before: launching new aircraft and engine programs with world-class performance goals, building new global air traffic management systems and launching new manned space missions to name a few. Coordinating regional safety and security and transforming legacy government infrastructures into viable 21st century enterprises will also add to this complex set of business challenges.
