Broadcom Extends Its MoCA(R)-Integrated Product Family With a Low Cost HD Client Set-Top Box SoC Solution

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 — (PRNewswire) — 2010 International CES -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced the latest addition to its Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®)-integrated product family with the BCM7408 client high definition (HD) set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution. When paired with a media server or IP gateway solution enabled by Broadcom technology (such as the Broadcom® BCM7420 video decoder SoC with integrated MoCA), the BCM7408 client SoC solution enables manufacturers to leverage Broadcom's extensive connected home software suite and low cost design to lead the deployment of whole-home connected entertainment services such as multi-room HD DVR.

Highlights/Key Facts:

  • The BCM7408 enables cost-efficient and small form factor STB designs that incorporate the following advanced functionality:
    • Integrated MoCA 1.1 enables the distribution of high quality digital multimedia content throughout the home over existing coaxial cable enabling subscribers to securely access, store and share a wide array of digital media content including HD programs, video-on-demand, HD DVR recordings, Internet content, video, music, photos and voice over IP.  
    • Comprehensive software support for compelling subscriber applications that includes RVU Alliance's remote user interface (RUI) technology, CEA-2014 RUI client, OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP), and Adobe® Flash® Platform for the Digital Home.  This unique and flexible software platform enables appealing interactive digital television, networked DVR functionality and IP video applications.
    • Integrated Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA®) technology support enables consumers to locate and enjoy digital content anywhere on their home network and effortlessly move or stream this content between DLNA-connected devices.
    • Integrated dynamic and very efficient power management controllers that are capable of managing and shutting down unused system components in real-time.  Even in the lowest power modes, the BCM7408 (and the BCM7420 video decoder) can continue to remain aware of network events in the home enabling these SoCs to quickly respond to network and user inputs.
    • Additional features include single 16 bit DDR2/3 capability for low cost / small footprint design, ultra high frequency (UHF) remote control for flexible and aesthetic installation options, 3D graphics support to enable dynamic and customizable user interfaces for flipping, rotating and moving images and USB 2.0 and MII port options for optional connectivity.

MoCA Background

The MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) standard enables the distribution of high quality digital multimedia content throughout the home over existing coaxial cable.  It has emerged as a popular method for in-home multimedia distribution among cable, satellite and telecommunications service providers in the U.S.  Support of the MoCA standard enables a new generation of media centers that can receive broadband digital media content via satellite, cable, telephony or Internet network connections.  Once the media center receives content, it can store, manage and maintain the digital rights, communicate the content or distribute the content to other media appliances in the home.
