Delcam adds Parasolid kernel to PowerSHAPE CAD software

 December 1, 2009 - Delcam has launched the first version of its PowerSHAPE CAD system to incorporate Parasolid® software; the most significant development in Delcam’s design software since it was first released some ten years ago.  This will provide major productivity and interoperability benefits to companies that use PowerSHAPE as a stand-alone design system and to those that use PowerSHAPE as part of Delcam’s complete product development suite.  Full details, including video demonstrations of the new functionality, are available at

The integration of Parasolid, the industry’s leading 3D geometric modelling component from Siemens PLM Software, reinforces PowerSHAPE’s solid modelling capabilities, alongside its unrivalled surface modelling capabilities developed over more than 30 years. The combination of the two technologies provides a powerful solution for designers that undertake conceptual design with PowerSHAPE and for toolmakers that use imported data extensively for tooling design.  In this first implementation the key benefits are:

  • easy conversion of existing PowerSHAPE solid models to Parasolid solid models, preserving feature history.
  • rapid creation of Parasolid solid models from PowerSHAPE surfaces and surfaces imported from other design systems.
  • import and export of Parasolid models in XT file format, without translation
  • complex and high-speed model editing to optimize models for manufacture

PowerSHAPE 2010 provides comprehensive tools to create valid Parasolid models from existing PowerSHAPE models and from data imported from systems that operate at lower precision than Parasolid.  PowerSHAPE 2010 uses the checker mechanism in Parasolid to report any inconsistencies in the model when data is imported. It then offers a series of automatic and interactive strategies to adjust surfaces as necessary, using its extensive tools to create a valid Parasolid model.

PowerSHAPE’s well established ability to work effectively with imported data is greatly enhanced by the addition of Parasolid.  Models in the Parasolid native XT file format can be imported directly from CAD systems based on Parasolid such as SolidWorks, Siemens PLM Software’s Solid Edge® software and NXTM software and also from many other systems, including Autodesk’s Inventor and PTC’s Pro/Engineer, that have Parasolid XT import/export filters.  It is estimated that over 40% of all 3D MCAD designs are stored in the Parasolid XT file format.  Naturally, once Parasolid models are created in PowerSHAPE, they can be exported as XT files to other systems.

The combination of PowerSHAPE and Parasolid technologies is especially important for designers of plastic products and housings.  These products are often designed as external surfaces using PowerSHAPE’s extensive surface creation and editing techniques.  The surfaces must then be developed into solid models for downstream operations, by adding thickness to the surfaces and adding features such as ribs and bosses.  Parasolid brings a new level of sophistication to this stage of the design process with its world-class functionality and performance.

A similar mix of technology will also benefit tool designers.  PowerSHAPE’s surface modelling is especially good at operations such as creating split lines and defining cores and cavities.  Solid modelling comes into its own when editing a design to optimize it for manufacture.  For example, in PowerSHAPE 2010, creating and editing of blend and fillet radii on complex models is much faster, and many blend editing restrictions have been removed.

The addition of Parasolid will also enhance Delcam’s unique Power Features technology.  Components that contain Power Features react automatically as they are placed within an assembly, adding all the necessary fit-features to the connecting components.  As each part is added, the tolerances between the various components are also defined automatically.  This automatic creation of relationships makes the development of the overall design much quicker than other CAD systems and also makes errors in the design process far less likely.
