Opening Day of COFES 2007 Kicks Off

CAD industry’s premiere event commences in Scottsdale

Scottsdale, AZ. April 12, 2007 -- Cyon Research Corporation, organizer of the Congress On the Future of Engineering Software (COFES), today welcomed more than 280 attendees from across the globe to the kickoff of the 8th annual industry event.

The unique COFES forum represents the meeting of the best minds of the engineering software industry, where a relaxed and informal atmosphere encourages both private and public discussions. The three-day event gives executives and engineers, generalists and specialists a chance to address the most important issues facing both users and vendors of engineering technologies.

“COFES presents us with a unique opportunity to learn from peers, competitors, analysts, visionaries, and most importantly, users in the engineering software community,” said Rainer Gawlick, vice president of worldwide marketing for SolidWorks Corporation. “We leverage this conference to round out the information we constantly elicit from our own customers and to identify the engineering community’s most pressing business needs.”

For Robert Bou, president of Ashlar Incorporated, the annual conversation in Scottsdale provides a much-needed dialogue that sets a tone of community, rather than of competition: “COFES is the only time when the cooperation among those in the engineering software industry approaches the cooperation demanded by all of our customers.”

The highly anticipated keynote of COFES 2007 will be given by science fiction author and non-fiction visionary Bruce Sterling, who will speak about how current technologies may converge in the future, dramatically changing how products are designed, manufactured, distributed, and recycled. Sterling introduces a vision of the “internet of things,” where all manufactured objects will have an informational component.

“Sterling is the perfect sort of keynote,” says Joel Orr of Cyon Research. “We look to our special guest speaker to inspire us with visions of the possible as well as to caution us about the unthinkable. It is Bruce’s kind of far-reaching imagination that takes attendees out of the mindset of day-to-day business and makes us realize the exciting potential of the future.”

This year, COFES enjoys unprecedented support from sponsors and Technology Suite participants, who rent space for company promotion and private meetings. Event sponsors include UGS, Spatial, and Microsoft. Returning this year with technology suites are Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Dassault Systems, Dell, IBM, PTC, and UGS. They are joined by Arena Solutions, Ashlar-Vellum, Rapidform, and Seemage, which are new to the Technology Suites at COFES.

The theme of COFES 2007 is “the globalization of engineering.” Many of the briefings and small discussion groups will focus on the issues of an industry that is growing more interdependent across continents.
