MSC Software’s Dytran Explicit Nonlinear FEA Helps Indian Register of Shipping Predict Responses of Ship Structures Subjected to Underwater Explosion

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 24, 2014MSC Software Corporation, a global leader in helping product manufacturers to advance their engineering methods with simulation software and services, today announced that Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), an internationally recognized independent ship classification society, has selected MSC Software’s Dytran explicit nonlinear simulation solution for underwater explosion analysis.

International waters are increasingly under threat thereby creating the need to protect high value naval and commercial vessels and more importantly human lives at sea. In particular, threat from low intensity to high intensity underwater explosion (also known as UNDEX) is of great concern and has catastrophic consequences on ship structures. Hence, the need to design the structure to withstand large shock loads that are generated as a result of UNDEX is of paramount importance. Engineers at IRS have chosen Dytran to simulate this phenomenon and gain early design insights into the performance of the ship structure.

To predict UNDEX effects is quite challenging and complex as the vessel can be subjected to different types of loading conditions. Depending on explosion charge size and its proximity to the ship structure, response can be significantly different. The sequence of events in underwater explosion consists of shock wave formation, gas bubble oscillation, bubble migration and finally collapse of gas bubble forming water jet. It is not feasible to practically test each scenario so engineers at IRS have turned to explicit nonlinear simulation to virtually validate UNDEX effects on the ship design. Accurately simulating UNDEX gives engineers considerable advantage to predict worst case scenarios and strengthen hot spots.
