SIMBEAM Reloaded – SIMPACK.

July 2, 2013 - SIMPACK AG, a renowned leader in multi-body simulation software, has announced the newest version of its SIMBEAM software.  Full parameterization and integration into the Preprocessor make it easier than ever to set up flexible beam structures.

SIMBEAM is a software module that allows users to create flexible 3D structures comprised of Euler Bernouli or Timoshenko Beam Elements. These can be used to model towers of wind turbines, leaf springs, lattice structures, shafts, etc. SIMBEAM has been a key part of SIMPACK’s repertoire since its initial development in 2001.

All dimensions, beam elements, and physical properties of a SIMBEAM body can now be described by subvariables.  A flexible body is, therefore, automatically updated when any subvariable referenced by the SIMBEAM model is changed.  In addition, everything can be defined using scripting and visualized in both 2D and 3D.

Users have the option to enable or disable geometric stiffening terms in the equations of motion. This is necessary, for example, when modeling helicopter rotor blades which stiffen with increased rotational speed. Enabled, geometric stiffening is considered for accelerations, angular velocities, angular accelerations of the body reference frame, and concentrated forces/torques on nodes which have loads applied.

Several other updates contribute to SIMBEAM’s user-friendliness. Users can assign two different cross-sections of the same standard cross-section type to the nodes of the same element. This results in increased accuracy with a smaller number of elements, and overall easier model set-up. In addition, node locations and elements can directly be copied and pasted from spreadsheets, e.g., Excel.

With the new version of SIMBEAM, users can now carry out fully automated DoE (Design of Experiments) of multi-body systems, including variations of flexible beam structures. This SIMBEAM functionality is available with the release of SIMPACK 9.4, May 2013.
