Digital Audio Company Amplifies Engineering Design and Collaboration Processes Using Omnify Empower PLM

TEWKSBURY, MA -- (Marketwired) -- May 28, 2013 -- Omnify Software, a provider of web-based Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software for discrete manufacturers, announces its latest customer case study featuring Apogee Electronics, a leading manufacturer of professional digital audio interfaces and microphones for recording and listening to music. Apogee invested in Omnify Empower PLM to replace cumbersome Excel spreadsheets and other home grown tools in order to gain centralized and automated processes for managing product information.

Apogee's latest products ONE, JAM and MiC, designed especially for Apple® iPad®, iPhone®, Mac®, and GarageBand® software, are proof that Apogee continues to be at the forefront of recording technology. Like many new companies, Apogee was managing product information with Excel spreadsheets where Bills of Materials (BOMs) were maintained manually and changes were managed in a homegrown system. The manual approach of hand entering information into spreadsheets proved to be error-prone with mistakes that wound up being very costly. In addition, Excel did not provide any capabilities for revision control or assessing the effects of design decisions.

Apogee was seeking a software solution to meet their specific needs around managing BOM revisions, document vaulting, and signoff procedures with a clear record of all changes. "The biggest factor for us in finding a solution was price followed by integration with our PADS PCB design tool, compatibility with MAC devices and the ability to own the data," stated Marcus Fan, IT Manager for Apogee Electronics. "We looked at a few Product Lifecycle Management vendors including Arena Solutions, Siemens PLM and Omnify Software, and Omnify's web-based solution provided all of the functionality we required with a price that was right for us."

The Omnify Empower PLM system is used by the Engineering and Operations teams at Apogee and their Contract Manufacturing partners who have been granted a view-only access. Integration to their Mentor Graphics PADS® environment allows engineering to access Omnify Empower from directly within PADS®. They use this integration to facilitate the managing and sharing of all part data with important parameters synchronized between the two systems. The ability to apply unlimited attributes to a part in Empower allows Apogee engineers to search for parts based on functionality while providing additional business data such as where used, cost, lead time and inventory, to make better design choices up front. Upgrading from Excel to Omnify has helped Apogee to save on time spent searching for information, guarantee their data is accurate and improve their design process.

"Many of our customers start off using spreadsheets to manage their BOMs because it's an easy place to start but soon find the lack of scalability, revision control, and functionality make it quite costly," stated David Whitney, Vice President of Strategic Sales for Omnify Software. "Eventually customers like Apogee reach a point where they need to upgrade to a more robust, centralized solution and select Omnify Empower for its ease of use, data management and collaboration capabilities, and ability to integrate with their existing engineering design tools."
