Nimbic VP of Engineering Dr. Don MacMillen to Present Paper on “Electronic Design in the Cloud – Lessons Learned”

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA –  Thursday, April 11, 2013 – Nimbic, the leading provider of 3D Full-Wave Electromagnetic Simulation solutions and a session sponsor of the 20th Annual Electronic Design Process Symposium (EDPS), today announced that Dr. Don MacMillen, Vice President of Engineering, Nimbic, will present a paper titled “Electronic Design in the Cloud – Lessons Learned” at EDPS 2013 Symposium in Monterey, California.

The Cloud is shifting the computing paradigm: Simply put, large-scale commodity computing (millions of servers) virtualized and delivered through the Internet results in lower cost of ownership and better scalability, performance, and utilization. The Cloud is being adopted widely across consumer and enterprise applications, but electronic design has been a laggard in adoption. We have been working for over two years on electromagnetic simulation in the cloud, the main concerns of organizations regarding cloud adoption we have encountered are not surprising:

  • Large Data Files
  • Interactive Graphics
  • Existing in-House IT Resources
  • Cost
  • Business Model

This presentation addresses these concerns, and showcases particular solutions to interactive graphics using HTML5 and WEBGL that address the demands of big data. Planning the design flow to keep the majority of design data cloud based avoids the round tripping of large data files associated with high end design.

Grid computing is still alive and well in the cloud, where batch schedulers are utilized to manage the execution of many parallel jobs. As the cloud matures, it will increasingly be adopted at the high-end by designers that benefit from instant access of large amount of computing resources and at the low-end by designers that benefit from the convenience of design in the cloud.
