Lagoa Leverages the Cloud to Reinvent 3D Design

Raises $1.6M to launch new platform

Boston, Montreal and Bonn -- April 2, 2013  - Lagoa gives CAD designers powerful tools to allow them to produce photoreal, MultiOptics renderings using only a browser.  Cloud subscriptions eliminate the need to manage software licenses and designers are no longer tied to their hardware to get the realism they desire. Building the platform in the cloud versus the desktop means that instead of being beholden to the limits of a desktop machine or sending projects to a render farm to ensure completion, everyone has immense power to render in realtime- quickly and accurately.

Co-founder and CEO, Thiago Costa, who previously built the desktop physics engine Lagoa MultiPhysics, sees two major problems with software technology.  “People don’t want to pay for software.” Costa said. “They just want to create.”  Working as a creative in 3D design in CAD, advertising, motion graphics, movies and gaming something fiercely bothered him. “I kept asking myself: Why do they make all the tools as if we work in isolation?”

Lagoa makes design a more powerful and collaborative process.  Creatives and engineers  can work on projects and scenes simultaneously.  Lagoa does not stop there. Costa co-founded the company with Arno Zinke who has a PHD in physically-based rendering. Zinke is tasked with building the European Office in Bonn, Germany for research and development of accurate physically-based materials and techniques for simulating optically accurate materials.

“We take advantage of our research to achieve physically plausible results.” says Zinke.  “Because we can leverage the power of the cloud, we do not need to pre-calculate. The result is stunning realism in materials like cloths, car paint and we even do hair, all at interactive frame rates."

Costa also tagged former Bluestreak and Matrox engineering lead Dov Amihod as a co-founder and CTO to build a powerful infrastructure for managing complex assets data, rendering and collaboration. Rounding out the executive team is former allen & gerritsen social, location, mobile and marketing exec Mike “@Schneidermike” Schneider as CMO and head of the Boston office.
