The vision of PLM is to provide an environment to manage the complete product lifecycle, including processes, data and resources across the extended enterprise - without the need to overhaul the fabric and infrastructure of an organization.

This presentation will address how OMWD deploys its GIS throughout the water district. Since creating the GIS in 2000, OMWD accessess its GIS data using a GIS application service provider and consultant that employs MapObjects technology. With help from its GIS consultant, OMWD plans to change the GIS delivery platform to an ArcIMS and ArcSDE solution. The presentation will address how OMWD will benefit from using this solution. The presentation will also include a demostration of the solution.

In 2002, under the leadership of Sheriff Ken Jenne, BSO was "re-introduced" to GIS technology by establishing an Enterprise GIS that integrated mapping technology into the agency's law enforcement business processes. To further that challenge, in September 2003, the Broward County Fire Rescue was merged under the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO). This merger marks the first time in United States history that a fire rescue department and a sheriff's office have merged. The arrangement establishes the Broward Sheriff's Office as a "full service" public service agency. This presentation will unveil the strategies and applications being developed to meet the ever-increasing public safety demands from both law enforcement and fire-rescue--ranging from Mobile GIS for Critical Response/Homeland Security/E911 Dispatch/Disaster Response, Web-based mapping applications for Felony Warrant tracking, customized querying tools for Fire-Rescue and Crime Analyses, 3-D visualization of Public Safety Facilities, Plume Modeling for Disaster-Response, and much more.

Although GIS has proven to be a valuable tool to local governments during major emergencies, it is often not fully leveraged. This paper will examine the reasons and explore steps to accomplish the goal of fully utilizing GIS during emergencies. Experience at the City of Seattle and the TopOff 2 anti-terrorism exercise will provide the basis for this discussion. Topics covered will include organizational culture, business process analysis, inter-jurisdictional coordination, the growth of the GIS user-base, metadata, applications with embedded GIS and the place of GIS in the Emergency Management organizations. The paper will offer GIS practitioners ideas on improving collaboration with emergency management.

The management of coastal resources in conjunction with increasing development use is an ongoing issue that can be addressed with effective management tools such as GIS. In this study, conducted by the non-profit research organization Coastal Ecosystems Research Foundation, the ArcView extension Animal Movement provides a useful tool to assess distribution, habitat use and movement patterns of animals based on GPS sightings of 100 individual gray whales over a period of 10 years in a summering feeding ground off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. The gray whale, Eschrichtius robustus, is one of the few species of wildlife to experience a population recovery sufficient to remove it from the Endangered Species List, followed by a population increase and increasing need for undeveloped coastal feeding habitats. By combining assessment tools useful for biologists, conservation managers and coastal developers, a plan for the sustainable management of our coastal resources is possible.

Edward H. Hammond (1954, 1964a, 1964b) developed a macro landform classification procedure that has been used for mapping landforms around the world. Hammond’s classification is quantitative in nature with explicit definitions that can easily be applied by other researchers. Hammond’s procedure combines three important parameters—slope, relief, and profile type—to identify different landform, or terrain types.

The arid and semi-arid lands in Africa are under pressure from the increased human population that demand increased land for food production and settlement. This determines how land is used and this consequently affects the soil and vegetation. This paper will present preliminary findings of a study being undertaken for a master thesis. The research questions are: What are the land uses in the southern Samburu? Which plant species are present in the study area? and To what extent can spatial pattern of landforms and soil characteristics explain relation of the spatial distribution of the land use and vegetation dynamics? Soil and vegetation data were collected on 20x20 sample plots along transects. Position information of these plots were collected from GPS and stored as waypoints. Aerial photographs were used to collect land use data. Waypoints files were converted into ArcView shapefiles using mapsite 3.0.
