MCADCafe Weekly Review May 29th, 2014

Editor’s Note: This is the second installment of a series of four evaluation articles of CAD/PDM systems for SMBs.

Overview

SolidWorks Enterprise PDM is one of two PDM products offered by DS SolidWorks and is a separate purchase. SolidWorks Workgroup PDM is available integrated inside of SolidWorks Premium and Professional.

Data cards are crucial elements for managing design data with EPDM because they contain metadata about the files, folders, items, and templates in the vault database. Data card information is stored centrally, so users can search and locate information about files, folders, items, and templates without needing local copies.

By adding controls such as text fields, list boxes, check boxes, and tabs, data cards are used for managing the design process.

Design without worrying about the process

3DExperienceDare to dream: collaborative design with socially connected projects that facilitate design iteration. Wouldn’t that be nice? I know that I could have personally benefited from this concept numerous times. Today we will answer some of the questions that I know a lot of you will have, because I had them myself.

Let’s start with the basics. What is the 3DEXPERIENCE? I have heard several people refer to it as the Facebook for SOLIDWORKS users. There is something to that, but not in the way that you might think. Facebook has forever changed the way that we interact with our social groups.   In a similar way, the 3DEXPERIENCE is going to change the way that we interact and work as design teams. You probably won’t see videos of cats jumping into walls in the 3DEXPERIENCE unless, of course, your company designs cat retention systems.

3DEXPERIENCE is a platform that allows users to interact with task specific apps, update colleagues, and capture other ideas as they happen.

Carl Bass is CEO of 3D design and engineering software leader Autodesk. In this speech at the 2014 Solid Conference, he discussed the new ways small companies are changing manufacturing, and how trends in business and technology are influencing this evolution. He highlights the intersection of hardware and software—both proprietary and open—and the communities that are shifting what’s possible.

Universal Weldment BOM Template

Suppose you want to make a SOLIDWORKS Universal BOM Template for mixed weldments which incorporates weldment structural members but also sheet or plate and even purchased parts. Suppose you also want to automate the BOM as much as possible to avoid manually inputting data and have it update parametrically with changes in your design… How do you accommodate the three different types of components so that manufacturing knows which materials to use, and accounting can quickly add up the material costs?
