SHeLvEd: Behind the Scenes

Monday, October 27th, 2014

This post contains spoilers so be sure to have watched our new 3D printed stop-motion short, SHeLvEd, before reading: SHeLvEd: GoEngineer YouTube

When I was first approached about creating a stop-motion film using 3D printed characters I immediately accepted. “It would be fun,” I thought “…and it will be easy.”
Well the very first thing I learned about filmmaking is that it is not easy. Before I even made it to the technically difficult parts, I was confronted with the surprisingly tough artistic challenges:

  • What is the storyline?
  • Who are the characters and what do they look like?
  • How many explosions should we add?
  • Is the ending happy, sad, confusing, a cliffhanger or all of the above?

Inglorious Administrators

Glory comes in one form with data management – Automation.

In a huge corporate demonstration with executives looking on and a hundred thousand on the line, the only “oohs” and “aahs” you’ll hear are the ones connected to productivity gain. Everyone at that level loves to see labor intensive tasks that today, take several steps and possibly a dedicated human resource, reduced to a right click menu option.

For example, let’s take an EPDM admin that supports an engineering group. He may get a small pat on the back for building in the ever essential revision control… But, watch their eyes light up when automated emails and electronic signatures are brought online.

From the top of the organization to the end CAD user, automation is king. We’ve seen some really slick automation over the years and then we’ve seen some downright brilliance. Whether from our own implementation specialists or from customer administrators, the following examples are sure to please.

Shape Up The Way You Search With EXALEAD OnePart

3DExperience-272x300Many of our GoEngineer customers already know me; I’ve been helping you with your Data Management issues for years. There is much more to Data Management than Revision Control, Change Processes, and Collaboration, it is also about organizing and finding your data.

One of the biggest challenges with the massive amounts of data generated by companies and individuals these days, is that it can be very tough to organize, and even tougher to search. You inevitably end up making multiple copies of your files (compounding the size of your dataset) and probably have them saved in various locations – perhaps one copy in your PDM system, another copy on a network drive for the shop floor, and a 3rd PDF that’s stored and managed in your PLM system.

It’s great that you’re already using tools like PDM and PLM, but there hasn’t been a way to search all 3 sources simultaneously, in the same interface, without building a homegrown/custom search tool to do so.

On-Demand Communication For Design Teams

Social, connected, conceptual, and instinctive are the four pillars of the 3DEXPERIENCE—the next step for the design community!

We should all know what these words mean on their own, but how does that definition change in the context of the design environment?

Let’s explore the definitions of the first two pillars: social and connected. (more…)

Design without worrying about the process

3DExperienceDare to dream: collaborative design with socially connected projects that facilitate design iteration. Wouldn’t that be nice? I know that I could have personally benefited from this concept numerous times. Today we will answer some of the questions that I know a lot of you will have, because I had them myself.

Let’s start with the basics. What is the 3DEXPERIENCE? I have heard several people refer to it as the Facebook for SOLIDWORKS users. There is something to that, but not in the way that you might think. Facebook has forever changed the way that we interact with our social groups.   In a similar way, the 3DEXPERIENCE is going to change the way that we interact and work as design teams. You probably won’t see videos of cats jumping into walls in the 3DEXPERIENCE unless, of course, your company designs cat retention systems.

3DEXPERIENCE is a platform that allows users to interact with task specific apps, update colleagues, and capture other ideas as they happen.
