Manufacturing Leaders to Be Honored at SME Annual Meeting May 30

DEARBORN, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is pleased to recognize its 2003 Honorary Member and the recipients of its International Honor Awards for distinguished contributions to manufacturing, technology, and education. SME also announces the 12 recipients of its Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Awards.

Honorary Membership and the International Honor Awards will be presented at the SME Annual Awards Banquet at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, May 30. The banquet is one of the major manufacturing industry events that make up the Society's five-day 2003 Annual Meeting -- "Where Manufacturing Comes Together." HONORARY MEMBER: Lewis B. Campbell, chairman, president and Chief Executive Officer of Textron Inc., is SME's 2003 Honorary Member, in recognition of his professional eminence in manufacturing technology.

  INTERNATIONAL HONOR AWARDS:
  Anne L. Stevens - Eli Whitney Productivity Award

Anne L. Stevens is being recognized for distinguished accomplishments in improving capability within the broad concept of orderly production. As vice president, North America Vehicle Operations, Ford Motor Company, Stevens oversees the operations of eight stamping and tool-and-die plants, and 21 assembly plants in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Eleanor M. Josaitis - SME Education Award

Eleanor M. Josaitis has been selected as the educator most respected for the development of manufacturing-related curricula, fostering sound training methods, and inspiring students to enter the profession of manufacturing. Eleanor Josaitis is executive director and co-founder of Detroit's Focus: HOPE, the nationally recognized training program that equips urban youth with the technical expertise and job skills needed to enter the economic mainstream.

Keith M. Gardiner - Joseph A. Siegel Service Award

SME member Keith M. Gardiner will be honored for making unique contributions to benefit SME. Gardiner, PhD, FSME, CMfgE, PE, and director/professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. has exemplified the meaning of service to others in his more than 30 years of SME involvement.

Professor - Ing. Rafael Wertheim - SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal

Rafael Wertheim will be honored for his significant published research leading to a better understanding of materials, facilities, principles and operations and their application to improving the manufacturing process. Dr. -Ing. Rafael Wertheim, director of Engineering Services for ISCAR Ltd. in Tefen, Israel, has served as adjunct professor at the prestigious Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology.

David E. Flinchbaugh - Albert M. Sargent Progress Award

David E. Flinchbaugh is being recognized for creating unique materials and engineering fabrication processes to mass-produce a breakthrough medical and healthcare product. Flinchbaugh, PhD, PE, CMfgE, CEM, vice president, director of manufacturing and founder of UroSolutions, Inc., in Orlando, Fla., has spent the last 14 years inventing, patenting and trademarking the UroCycler(R) bladder management system, a device that can potentially benefit 100 million users each year.

Frederick J. Michel - SME Gold Medal

Frederick J. Michel is being honored for his outstanding service to the manufacturing engineering profession in technical communications through published literature, technical writings and lectures. Michel, FSME, CMfgT, president, Factory Operations & Factory Automation, is an international authority on manufacturing technology and its impact on government, on workers and on the factory of the future.

JIRI TLUSTY SME OUTSTANDING YOUNG MANUFACTURING ENGINEER AWARDS

The Jiri Tlusty SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award will honor twelve recipients, all 35 years of age or younger, in recognition of their significant achievements and leadership in manufacturing engineering. SME has bestowed the awards annually since 1980.

* William Singhose, assistant professor, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga.

* James A. Stori, assistant professor, University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.

Industry Recipients:

Cormier, Fidan, Herrmann, Li and Engelhorn will receive their awards at the SME Annual Meeting's Special Youth Recognition Luncheon in Dearborn, Mich., on May 31. The other awards will be presented at an awards luncheon on May 21, 2003 at NAMRC 31 (North American Manufacturing Research Conference) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
