Napier Turbochargers signs $1 million contract with Majenta PLM for the supply and implementation of a product lifecycle management solution

Cranfield, UK. 3 September, 2008. – Majenta PLM, the leading indirect sales and support channel partner of Siemens PLM Software in the UK, has announced that it has signed a contract with Lincoln-based Napier Turbochargers Ltd for the supply, implementation and on-going support of a product design and lifecycle management (PLM) solution based on Siemens PLM Software’s NX™ and Teamcenter® software suites. The contract is valued at around $1 million.

As a result, Napier’s future large axial turbocharger product design and engineering requirements will be undertaken using multiple licenses of NX 3D solid modeling software, including advanced sheet metal design capabilities, while NX advanced finite element modeling (FEM) software will provide pre- and post-processing of 3D CAD models for engineering analysis, with interfaces to third-party solvers Ansys® and Abaqus. A number of licenses of Siemens PLM Software’s Solid Edge® Drafting software will also be provided as a replacement for existing seats of a well known 2D drafting system.

In addition to the design software, NX computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software for turning and for mill-turn and multi-axis milling will provide Napier’s production floor with advanced digital manufacturing facilities that are fully integrated with the design engineering environment.

Data management, including change management and shop floor product data viewing facilities, will be provided through Siemens PLM Software’s Teamcenter Express software suite while a number of licenses of the Teamcenter visualization application will provide digital mock-up (DMU) and advanced design visualization facilities. Teamcenter will also provide Napier with the ability to use legacy design information from other CAD software products.

Ambitious plans
“The PLM solution that Majenta PLM is supplying and is helping us to implement will help to ensure that the right product information is at the right place at the right time”, said Andy Thacker, managing director, Napier Turbochargers Limited. “It is therefore crucial to the continued development of our range of products and to the success of the ambitious growth plans we have in each of our markets, where we are already recognized as a leading supplier.”

“Napier is renowned as an innovative company with an excellent suite of products delivering high technical performance,” he added. “I am pleased that the business has been acquired by a shareholder that is committed to investing further in R&D to maintain its technology and in the expansion of the business to meet customer demand”.

Trevor Stapleton, sales director, Majenta PLM, stated, “The Napier heritage includes such world-famous achievements as a series of land speed, air speed and water speed world records in the late 1920s and early 1930’s that culminated in the land speed record of 394.196 mph set in 1947. We are therefore delighted to be selected by the modern-day descendent, Napier Turbochargers Ltd, to provide and support the technology that will help the company build on its heritage and on its much more recent successes”.

Guy Langley, UK managing director, Siemens PLM Software, commented, “When Majenta PLM was formed as a Siemens PLM Software business partner two years ago its stated aim was to become the No. 1 PLM software and services provider to the UK mid-market. We congratulate them on this sale and on the successful conclusion of their negotiations with Napier Turbochargers.”

The first phase of the PLM system implementation schedule was completed at the end of August, with additional user training and on-going technical support following on from that.
