CADCAM developer Delcam and machine tool supplier DMG are to join forces for a series of free 5-axis machining workshops aimed at companies looking to invest in this technology. The workshops, which will include live machining demonstrations, will be held on 9th and 10th October on the site in Farnworth, near Bolton, shared by aerospace component manufacturer Silcoms and Delcam North Programming Services. A morning and afternoon session will be held on each day, with one session focussed on the use of 5-axis machining in the aerospace industry and the other on toolmaking applications.

5-axis machining offers many advantages, most importantly the ability to manufacture components in fewer set-ups. Reducing the number of set-ups gives increased productivity and saves money by limiting the number of fixtures needed. 5-axis machining also allows shorter cutters to be used. This enables higher feed rates to be set, giving further increases in productivity. Shorter cutters also experience less vibration and so improve quality and reduce hand finishing.

Over the past twelve months, the price of 5-axis machines has fallen so that they are now much more affordable for smaller companies. At the same time, developments in Delcam’s PowerMILL machining software have made the programming of 5-axis operations much easier and quicker.
5-axis machining now represents a cost-effective opportunity for all toolmakers and sub-contractors looking to increase productivity, improve quality and reduce delivery times. These workshops will allow these companies to find out more about the benefits of the technology and its potential in their manufacturing operations.
