New SAE International Aerospace Document Provides Standard for Wire Harness Marking

WARRENDALE, Pa., June 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A possible result of hot wire stamping in aircraft is that it could lead to damage or contribute to the initiation of arc tracking and system failures.

An accepted alternative to hot wire stamping is ultraviolet (UV) laser marking, which provides a simple, convenient, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective means of marking and identifying wires and jacketed cables in aircraft.

SAE International's new aerospace standard -- AS5649: Wire and Cable Marking Process, UV Laser -- serves as a process standard for all organizations involved in wire harness production requiring laser wire marking. AS5649 helps manufacturers save money by establishing a clear benchmark which has been set following industry trials to enable wire to be processed at the most economical power settings while ensuring minimum wire mark quality standards are met. In addition, implementation of the standard will clarify when and where laser marking equipment requires maintenance and where marking issues arise from the wire stock being used to construct wiring systems.
