Vero Announces Knowledge Transfer Project

Vero International Software and the University College London embark upon a Knowledge Transfer Project.

Vero International Software today announced the commencement of a two year project, sponsored by the DTI, to investigate and develop specific applications for the manipulation of STL data with a particular emphasis on the mould, die and shoe making industries.

The project, which is being managed by Vero’s R&D Director Gerard O’Driscoll and in collaboration with University College London (UCL), is anticipated to provide significant benefits in the conversion and management of scanned and imported data for advanced modeling and machining functions.

Typically, machining and visualization applications use STL data as it provides quick and accurate representations of the surfaces of the component to be manufactured. STL, however, does have its limitations in how the data can be utilized downstream in areas such as modeling and feature recognition.

As Gerard explains “STL data gives a good visual representation but does not include topological information. This effectively prevents data transfer between rapid prototyping and traditional CAD/CAM systems. This project is intended to generate a B-Rep solid model from STL so that scanned data can be modeled in the VISI-Series environment.”

Dr. Anthony Steed from the Department of Computer Science at UCL is the knowledge base supervisor of this project, that is being undertaken by Rama Vorray. Rama is working alongside the Vero development group at its head office in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Vero International Software’s VISI-Series, machining STRATEGIST and SMIRTware CAD/CAM solutions are world-leading applications for those involved in mould, die and press tool design and manufacture. Key features include very high capability, under-pinned by a fully integrated modular design system where users can simply select the modules they require for their individual business and add to the core program as their business expands or embraces new technologies.

Vero International Software is represented in over 40 countries by more than 80 distributors and, in addition to its extensive dealer network, has its own direct sales operations in the UK, France, Italy, USA, Japan, China and Canada
