Users to benefit from viaEuropa hosted map service enhancements

March 01, 2013 -- viaEuropa, the award winning hosted map service from Europa Technologies, has recently received a number of new enhancements to further benefit the users of the service.

The cartography which won the OS MasterMap Award for Better Mapping in 2012 has been extended to include a greyscale alternative, from a high level global view down to OS MasterMap Topography Layer with
detailed building outlines. This provides an even more subtle base map, ideal for users wanting to display their own layers of information on top. Shades of grey were carefully chosen to ensure the mapping remains both aesthetic and accessible.

Additionally, the viaEuropa service may now be consumed using the popular WMTS (Web Map Tile Service) implementation standard from OGC. This makes it even easier for organisations to start using the service and reduce their data management overheads. Notably, this includes users of Esri ArcGIS 10.1 software which now includes native support for consuming base maps using WMTS. This latest development means the viaEuropa service can now be consumed using three different standards: WMTS, TMS and WMS-C.

In response to user feedback, support has been added for consuming the viaEuropa service over HTTPS connections. This capability is very easy for developers to take advantage of, simply by changing the request URL to begin with HTTPS. This support means that organisations wanting to deploy secure applications over HTTPS can do so without having to break out to an unsecured map service. It is expected that this capability will become increasingly popular as the viaEuropa service is used more frequently in secure internal and external applications.

Lastly, the viaEuropa service is now available with a ‘per user’ subscription model. This development opens up access to the service for more specific usage, for example where a small team requires a hosted map
service for use in a specific business software application, without wanting to take out an organisation-wide subscription.

Warren Vick, Founder & Director of Europa Technologies, said: “We are delighted to announce these additional enhancements to the viaEuropa hosted map service. We are confident that these new features will be popular amongst our users and look forward to announcing further developments in the coming months.”
