GeoEye’s IKONOS satellite captures one-meter image one day after tornado touch down

This one-meter resolution satellite image by of Harrisburg, Illinois, by GeoEye was collected March 1, 2012, just one day after a Level 4 tornado touched down on February 29, 2012.

The image delineates the path of the tornado from west to east, with the major damage to buildings, structures and other facilities, including the Harrisburg Medical Center, one of the largest health care facilities in southeastern Illinois. Those who provide emergency response and relief efforts, plus ultimately aid in rebuilding, may be able to use this image to compare with images of the city before the tornado hit for insight into the total damage incurred. The image was collected by GeoEye’s IKONOS satellite while flying 423 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,000 mph.
